How to Grow Your Email List Without Social Media: Relationship-Based Strategies That Actually Work
If you’ve ever felt stuck in the scroll, burned out from the algorithm, or frustrated by how little Instagram seems to move the needle, this post is for you.
I had the best conversation with Kylie Kelly recently on The Organized Coach Podcast. Kylie is an email list strategist, host of the No Socials, No Worries podcast, and the founder of The Email Collab membership. What makes Kylie’s story so refreshing? She built her business—and a thriving email list—without social media. That’s right. No stories, no reels, no constant posting schedule. Just simple, sustainable collaboration strategies.
Whether you’re a coach, service provider, or course creator trying to figure out how to grow your email list without using social media, Kylie breaks it down in the most encouraging, practical way. Let’s get into it.
Why Kylie Walked Away from Social Media
Kylie spent a decade as a wedding photographer—so social media used to be her world. Gorgeous pictures, curated feeds… the whole thing. But during the pandemic, everything changed. She was pregnant with her second child, weddings were canceled, and suddenly she found herself reevaluating everything.
What she knew was this: she needed a new business model that didn’t require travel or constant online performance.
She kept hearing experts talk about email marketing—so she tried it. But promoting her freebie on Instagram? Crickets. All that energy spent making the “perfect” post, and no one opted in.
From Zero to 600 Subscribers—with Zero Social Media
Here’s where it gets good.
Instead of trying harder on social, Kylie pivoted completely. She started building genuine relationships with other online business owners, which led her to hosting her first virtual summit.
Even with no email list of her own, that summit brought in 600 subscribers.
She rinsed and repeated—and her list doubled.
➡️ Key takeaway: You don’t need a massive audience to host a summit. You just need the willingness to reach out, connect, and create value.
Collaboration-Based Email List Growth Strategies
Kylie shared her top four strategies for growing your email list without social media. These are gold for coaches and online business owners looking for a more aligned, low-pressure approach:
1. Virtual Summits
Create a themed event, invite speakers to contribute (pre-recorded or live), and have each one promote it to their list. You act as the host, so you collect the opt-ins.
Tip: Kylie recommends audio summits if you’re short on time—she even ran hers through Voxer!
2. Bundles
Curate a collection of free or paid digital resources from contributors who serve a similar audience. Everyone shares the bundle, and you all benefit.
➡️ Mistake to avoid: Don’t just join any bundle. Be intentional about the audience it’s attracting and the value you’re providing. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a cold list that doesn’t convert.
3. Freebie Swaps
Find a coach or creator who serves your ideal client (but isn’t a competitor), and each of you promotes the other’s lead magnet to your email list.
4. Podcast Guesting
Yep, this! By guesting on aligned podcasts, you instantly borrow trust and can share your freebie with warm audiences. Bonus: it doesn’t feel like marketing—it feels like a conversation.
The V2 Collaboration Framework
To help her clients simplify their strategy, Kylie created what she calls the V2 Framework. It’s all about choosing one strategy from each “V” for a well-rounded, effective plan.
- V1: Relationship-Based Growth (e.g. summits, swaps, podcast guesting)
- V2: Search + SEO-Based Growth (e.g. blogging, podcasting, Pinterest, YouTube)
If you’re podcasting regularly or have a blog already, congratulations! You’re already hitting the long-game side of this. Now all you need is one collaboration-based list growth strategy running alongside it.
The combo is simple but powerful—and sustainable.
Worried About Over-Promoting?
Let’s be real. If you’re part of multiple bundles or summits, it’s easy to wonder: “Am I emailing my list too much about other people’s stuff?”
Here’s Kylie’s advice:
- Once a month is a great rhythm for promoting someone else’s offer.
- Always leave space for your content and nurture emails in between.
- Don’t copy-paste the swipe copy. Customize your message so your audience knows why you’re sharing it.
If you’ve ever had someone unsubscribe after a promo email—don’t panic. It happens. You’re making space for people who are aligned.
What About Organizing It All?
As an organizer, I had to ask: how do you manage all the moving pieces of summits, bundles, and swaps?
Her answer? A simple Google Sheet.
Track the event name, your pitch status, what you submitted, deadlines, and—most importantly—results. That way, when someone invites you back, you can quickly decide if it’s worth it.
It’s such a brilliant tip—and you know I’ll be color coding mine.
Should You Quit Social Media Cold Turkey?
If Instagram isn’t working for you, but you’re afraid to step away—Kylie has a few thoughts:
- Check your analytics. If you’re getting 5 clicks a month, is it really worth the effort?
- Try a 90-day pause. Replace the energy you’d spend posting with one of the V2 strategies.
- Create a simple 9-grid Instagram profile as a “shop front,” and direct people to your list-building offer.
It’s not about quitting forever—it’s about giving yourself permission to try something that works better for you.
The Systems That Make It Work
Kylie keeps her business lean and clutter-free with just a few tools:
- Google Drive: for file organization
- ThriveCart: for checkout pages and registration
- Airtable: for tracking speaker info and submissions
- Voxer: for summit interviews (so good!)
And guess what? She does it all without a team. Just systems, simplicity, and smart planning.
